Consultation on relaxing PRS smoke alarm requirements

September 11, 2017

The Scottish Government has published a consultation to seek views on possible changes to the smoke and heat detection standards in the PRS.  Currently all rented properties in Scotland need to have mainswired and interlinked heat and smoke detectors (the number depending on size and number of rooms) in their let tenancies.

This is due to the fact that there have been technological improvements in sealed-unit long life batteriy alarms which can also interlink.  We welcome this potential relaxation as it will help to reduce the installation costs and the inherent aesthetic issues relating to their installation, especially in traditional Edinburgh properties that have ornate cornicing.

The consultation can be found here and we encourage landlords to respond by the 1st December deadline.
